Calligraphy Rhapsody - Retrospective Exhibition of Georges
Mathieu showcases 14 major paintings spanning 40 years; from Mathieu’s early
practices which emphasize the calligraphic gesture and speed in the 1950s to
the paintings from the “cosmic shift” starting from 1984 which highlight his
potent intrinsic energy, especially through the three pieces of six-metre-wide
canvases that Mathieu specially created for his Grand Palais retrospective in
1978.
Join us on 10 & 17 June for a series of lectures on his life and work. As a “rebel dandy”, Mathieu embraced risks and challenged the world of order, inspirational for Graffiti artists today. His achievements thrived from the deconstruction of the past and reconciliation of the conflicts of the present: emotion and logic, spontaneity and model, chance and consistency, spiritual and physical, personal expression and shared experiences.
