Ashley Bickerton

Collaborated Project:

Emerald City

Ashley Bickerton was born in Barbados in 1959 and is currently living and working in Bali. Bickerton belonged to a group of artists known as Neo-Geo, which emerged in New York during the 1980s. Central to his work at the time was his abstract and geometric exploration of consumerism and industrialisation. As he left New York for Bali in 1993, his work began to take on a distinct hyper-realistic figurativism that parodied the Western fantasy of tropical island life. That said, his investigation of materiality has remained a major thread throughout his practice. Often blurring the boundaries between media, genre, and subject, Bickerton challenges the parameters of art making, and questions the value and significance of the art object itself.

Bickerton’s most recent solo show took place at The FLAG Art Foundation, New York (2017). Group exhibitions featuring his work include Brand New: Art and Commodity in the 1980s at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington (2016), and Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2016).
